What is blackstrap molasses?

I found this great article about blackstrap molasses..and want to share it with you!   This is an excerpt from a newsletter I recieve called "The Alternative Daily" written by Tanya Mead


I will be buying this marvelous elixir.  I remember as a child how my dad would tell us this was a great 'spring tonic'..Well, I sure need this tonic for a few of the 8 a ailments listed...



What do you think when you hear the word "molasses," slowly moving, syrupy-sweet brown liquid? It contains a wealth of minerals, including calcium, copper, chromium, iron, magnesium, manganese, potassium and selenium..also a source of vitamin B6.    Traditionally , blackstrap molasses has been used as an all-purpose health tonic, used by many families for a wide array of ailments. #1.  INFLAMMATION    eating (or drinking) a bit of molasses now and then can help to keep chronic inflammation at bay..


#2. ARTHRITIS PAIN     It can help relieve aching joints by reducing swelling and inflamation, it's mineral content helps to nourish bones and tissues. A tablespoon of black strap molasses in a glass of water (or a smoothie) each day may help arthritis sufferers experience less pain.


#3. IRON DEFICIENCY   it is high in iron and herefore, can be a great supplement for anyone who has issues with iron defciency.  Make sure to talk to your health professional before using blackstrap molasses to remedy your iron levels.


#4 MENSTRUAL MOOD SWINGS AND PAIN    The mineral content in blackstrap molasses can decrease mentrual cramp pain.

 Used as a hair mask blackstrap molasses may reduce hair loss. The wealth of minerals in this substance can improve hair health. Used as a hair mask it may help to fosten your hair and infuse it with moisture., It contains copper, whichs key to procucing hair pigment. 


#8 ADD AND ADHD      If magnesium and calcium balance is off in your body you may experience mental symtoms such as mood swing, irritability or hyperactivity.  The magnesium found in blacksrap molasses as well as its other minersl and B-vitamins, may help to balance moods, sand sharpen your focus and felieve ADD or ADHD symptoms.


How to eat blackstrap molasses

First of all, make sure you purchase high-quality 100 percent blackstrap molasses. You can use it in place of sugar in any baking and dessert recipes — just be ready for a richer flavor! Or, you can add a teaspoon to teas, smoothies or a mug of hot water. Blackstrap molasses is also great in sauces, glazes, and even salad dressings. Use your culinary imagination!
