NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS??
Do you make resolutions for the new year? I can't remmember the last time
I tried to make resolutions to start the year and forgotten or dropped them soon after.
I decided to make my New Year just a postive move forward..not look
back and fuss over what I could of, or should of..done. make happen, or accomplish in that last year.
I forgive myself for the past failed efforts at
resolutions that were, or may have been out of my reach. I know, we've been told to dream big...BUT.. I realize dreaming big and also being realistic is very important. The old saying "try and try again"..is often misused..the words, "I can't", and "never"
should be limeted to what is true in your own situation.
For instance...I can say "I can't"..do a marathon! I "NEVER" did..' I CAN'T' walk 2 miles
on the beach..anymore, the truth is, arthritis is the culprit not my will or want ! So instead of wishing or dreaming about what was, I have changed the method of those things I 'WANT' to do but may not be able to do physically.
I walk many beaches, through the use of video, the internet, TV, good movies, good books. (Have to be honest here, I admire those marathon runners etc. but that was never
a desire of mine..)
If I choose to make a resolution it would be to stay mentally active. I feel bad for so many seniors in my age group whose interests
have diminished, the reasons can be many I know..the key word here is staying involved in church and/or community activities. Volunteering at schools or hospital's, especially in children wards. Finding a way to give your TIME to others regardless of
what their need.
If transportation is a problem, there are senior vans. You can get information from the local Commnity Dept. of aging..in the Milwaukee
area you can call the aging resource center 414-289-6874
The Elks club in my neighborhood ..55th and Good Hope Rd. hosts the Senior Meal program and has
a wonderful group of people that enjoy the program. For only a $3.00 donation they enjoy a wonderfully prepared lunch by AMY and JIMBO..the caterers for the Elks club. Most important, is the fellowship of the around 100 people that come to enjoy a meal
5 days a week.
Mondays, they have music (senior musicians that love to share their talent) Wednesdays, bingo after the meal. Many get together to
play cards..this is just a small sample..and it's open to everyone..just call 414-760-3195 to tell them your coming or want to join...
I'm on the committee for
our 'Honor Society' at my church, Victory International Fellowship in Brookfield..we plan monthly events for people 50 and over..planned day trips, and once a year a week to 8 or 9 day trip, ususally in fall. I'M EXCITED ABOUT THIS FALL'S TRIP..WE'RE GOING
TO THE "ARK ENCOUNTER"...this will top last years steamboat trip I'm sure..
Your church or community may have groups that do this. Inquire at your church or town hall for information in
your community and neighborhood. You don't have to be a member of our church to join us, we'd love to meet you. For information about our group call our church at 262-783-2900..
Just want to tell all you seniors out there that life is NOW, DON'T SIT AROUND waiting for SOMETHING TO CHANGE..THE CHANGE IS IN YOU..Share your good talents with others.
I stay busy, useful and fullfilled by the following......
I'm active with the Elks club, I help with honoring Veterans with
their Veterens gift meal program, I set the dates and printing out their bio and photograph.
Church, Honor Society committee, event planning
Bible study, twice a month with the late ladies
Church, Piecemakers, once a week on Tuesday's "we could use your
help"...we sew clothing, quilts, etc. for mission here and abroad.
At home, I crotchet and knit caps for missions etc..
I enjoy games, movies, lunch or meals with friends and family (or alone if no one available)
I'm in the midst of setting up a website to offer good idea's, products etc. for seniors, starting at the active 50's and upward..I'll be launching it along with a new blog with good information and suggestions from reliable sources..by the end
of the month..so look for my new website called 'AGING LIFESTYLE SECRETS.COM
I will repeat what I said at the top of the article..pointing out how great my
sister is doing.
"AGE IS A FACT OF LIFE...GETTING OLD IS NOT!"
My favorite pastime is,
Writing and photography..passing on good and hopefully useful information. With the photography, I print out greeting and note cards using my photo's, oh I forgot to mention,
I send out the sympathy cards to families from our church and friends using my photo cards including bookmarks for rememberances.
I've always loved trying
new things, new crafts, meeting new people..name it !
I know this is a long post..It's not meant just for senior's either..life is too short not to share and enjoy.
I also would like to say "I'm not Saint Geri"..I have my bad days, my days of feeling sorry for myself...I accept that as a passing thingy ! One of the benefits of writing is just this.. admitting my faults and looking forward
to a better day..and try to make it TODAY!
"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under
heaven: ~ Ecc: 3:1
